German 2A/10C: General topics for final exam on 5/23/2016: Kapitel 8-10

Here are the general topics for the final exam for 2A students:

This exam will cover material from Kapitel 8-10:

For general review on some of the topics (simple past, adjective endings, genitive, reflexive pronouns and verbs, subordinating conjunctions) see this site.   Some of them have a "Lösungsblatt", but others do not.  Feel free to email me with a file of your completed exercise and I will look them over.

1.  Listening section on the topic of Freizeit

2.  Vocabulary identification

3.  Giving Directions (3 out of 4 options)  Review especially the vocabulary and phrases on pp. 268 and 269.  Don't try to be creative with this section, stay within the lines!  Otherwise, you could get into trouble crossing the street!

4.  Expressing comparisons: the superlative form

5.  Attributive adjectives in the comparative and superlative.

6.  Conjunctions:  subordinating.  Combine two sentences.  Study word order.  See pp. 244-246 for review and exercises to practice.

7.  Simple past (imperfect)

The strong verbs that you will need to memorize the simple past tense forms are:
                     a. kommen
                     b. essen
                     c.  fahren
                     d. gehen
                     e.  schreiben
                     f.  schlafen
                     g.  bleiben
                     h.  trinken
                     i.  laufen
                     j.  nehmen
                     k. sehen

also know the simple past of: haben, sein, and the modals.   To review simple past of modals, see the chart on page 196, Kapitel 6.  They are formed similarly to weak verbs, but lose the umlauts, where these have occurred in the present tense.  The "ich" and the "er, sie, es" form are identical.

8.  Attributive adjective endings !!  Review a similar section on the Kapitel 9 test.  Also, I will post the answers to the handout I gave the class on 5/9 in a follow up post.  (if you have misplaced it, you can find it here.  )   Here is what I noticed tripped some people up on the Kapitel 9 test:

a.  Not noticing that a prepositional phrase or verb required dative adjective endings.

b.  Not recognizing which case a given two-way preposition required.  You can review two-way prepositions on p. 186.

c.  Not recognizing a subject vs. a direct object (important really only for masculine nouns).

9.  Reflexive pronouns.  See pp. 248-249 for review.

10.  Genitive case

11.  Genitive prepositions

13.  A reading passage with comprehension questions

There will not be a writing passage!

10C presentation:

Choice of a topic covered in Kapitel 8-10.  Please include at least two examples of a noun modified with an adjective and the correct adjective ending, and one sentence with "weil" or other subordinating conjunction.

The Gesamtschule in Germany: An Alternative School System

A Gesamtschule
The Gesamtschule: Comprehensive schools that offer college preparatory classes.  Germany has a comprehensive school known as the Gesamtschule. While some German schools such as the Gymnasium and the Realschule have rather strict entrance requirements, the Gesamtschule does not have such requirements. They offer college preparatory classes for the students who are doing well, general education classes for average students, and remedial courses for those who aren't doing that well. In most cases students attending a Gesamtschule may graduate with the Hauptschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss or the Abitur depending on how well they did in school. The percentage of students attending a Gesamtschule varies by Bundesland. In the State of Brandenburg more than 50% of all students attended a Gesamtschule in 2007,[1] while in the State of Bavaria less than 1% did. Starting in 2010/2011, Hauptschulen were merged with Realschulen and Gesamtschulen to form a new type of comprehensive school in the German States of Berlin and Hamburg, called Stadtteilschule in Hamburg and Sekundarschule in Berlin (see: Education in BerlinEducation in Hamburg). Germany's most famous Gesamtschulen are the Helene-Lange-School in Wiesbaden and the Laborschule Bielefeld.

The "Schultüte" What is it? Where can I get one?

A "Schultüte" (or School Cone, even though the word "Tüte" translates more as "bag" from German), often also called Zuckertüte ("sugar bag", especially in Eastern Germany) is a paper (and later plastic) bag in form of a big cone.
When children in GermanyThe Czech Republic, close to the borders with Germany,[1] and Austria set off for their first day in school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with toyschocolatecandies, school supplies, and various other goodies. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter.  After the reunification of East and West, it was discovered that 85 cm. was the preferred length of the Schultüte in the East, while in the West, it was 70 cm!   Read more about the history here.  You can order your very own Schultüte on Amazon.de
