Common Pitfalls (best understood after the past subjunctive exercises are assigned)
Mixing Present and Past Subjunctive
Common mistakes that indicate you have not understood the subjunctive are using "würde" (which is used to form the present subjunctive) with a past participle of a verb (which is used to form the past subjunctive), or using "hätte" or "wäre" (which are used to form the past subjunctive) with the infinitive of the verb (which is used to form the present subjunctive):Ich würde gehen. [=I would go] Ich wäre gegangen. [=I would have gone] |
