German 2A/10C: Additional, Small Assignment for 5/4

When you read the Landeskunde-Info on p. 327. Look at the photo:  what are those strange objects that the children are carrying?  Also, take a look at the earlier post I had made about the 'Gesamtschule".

German 2A/10C: Assignment for 5/4/15: Kapitel 11

Please work on the workbook/lab manual for Kap 11, to hand in on 5/18.  Be sure to self-correct, using the answer key in the back of the workbook, and using a different color of ink.  As mentioned in class last evening (4/27), I am revising the plan for the 10C students' final presentations: they will be given, as originally planned, on the evening that the final is scheduled.  Students will take the listening section and then we (myself + 10C students) will go to a nearby room, where we will hear/watch the presentations.  I could plan to have a laptop available for use, if you prepare some sort of internet presentation or a Power Point presentation.  Topics will be posted alongside next week's assignment.

Thema 2, p. 324

Read and study categories of employment, pp. 324-25 and write answers.

Study Neue Wörter, p. 325 and Wortschatz, p. 346

Write answers to Akt. 5, p. 326

Akt. 6 will be done in class.

Prepare answers to Akt. 7, to be done in class.  Consult the list under "Erwartungen", p. 324 in jotting down your job requirements.  Try associating some of these "Erwartungen" with the professions on pp. 324-325, so that you can more easily recommend something to a classmate.

Go here to this website, a student job website.  Look at "Marley Spoon" and jot down responses to the following questions:

Was ist Marley Spoon
Welche Sprachkenntnisse soll man haben?
Muß man Computergrundkenntnisse haben?
Wie ist das Team?
Ist Marley Spoon das coolste Unternehmensumfeld in Berlin?
Was sind die Arbeitszeiten Mittwochs?
Wie viele Stunden arbeitet man pro Woche?

P. 327: Landeskunde-Info.  Please read and be prepared to answer the questions.

Grammatik im Kontext, p. 331

Read "The Future Tense", p. 331 and write 6 sentences for Übung 1

Read "Expressing Probability", p. 333, and prepare 3 "conversations" to review, Übung 2.  Use "wohl" or "wahrscheinlich" in your answers.

Read “The Interrogative Pronoun was für (ein)”, p. 337 and read notes

Listen to Ȕbung 7, p. 338 and circle the correct answers.

Prepare correct form of "was für" to Ȕbung 8, p. 338 (z.B., Was für Bücher liest du gern? Am liebsten lese ich Krimis.) to complete in class as questions to your classmates.

Read Landeskunde-Info, p. 327 and be prepared to answer the questions.

The Gesamtschule in Germany: An Alternative System

Gesamtschule in Germany
The Gesamtschule: Comprehensive schools that offer college preparatory classes.  Germany has a comprehensive school known as the Gesamtschule. While some German schools such as the Gymnasium and the Realschule have rather strict entrance requirements, the Gesamtschule does not have such requirements. They offer college preparatory classes for the students who are doing well, general education classes for average students, and remedial courses for those who aren't doing that well. In most cases students attending a Gesamtschule may graduate with the Hauptschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss or the Abitur depending on how well they did in school. The percentage of students attending a Gesamtschule varies by Bundesland. In the State of Brandenburg more than 50% of all students attended a Gesamtschule in 2007,[1] while in the State of Bavaria less than 1% did. Starting in 2010/2011, Hauptschulen were merged with Realschulen and Gesamtschulen to form a new type of comprehensive school in the German States of Berlin and Hamburg, called Stadtteilschule in Hamburg and Sekundarschule in Berlin (see: Education in BerlinEducation in Hamburg). Germany's most famous Gesamtschulen are the Helene-Lange-School in Wiesbaden and the Laborschule Bielefeld.

Grammatik im Kontext:

Read and study, "The Past Perfect Tense", p. 311 and write answers to Übung 15.
It is simply using the past tense of "haben" or "sein" and the past participle, which you already are familiar with.

Pay special attention to the note about "bevor" and "nachdem" and how they are used to connect sentences.

Note: much of this is based on concepts you already know, but it might be helpful to review the present perfect, presented in Kapitel 7, pages 217 >.

Topics for test, Kapitel 10:

1.  Listening section "Am Bahnhof."

2.  Verkehrsmittel fill in blank

3.  Two things you take on a trip to various locations

4.  Fill in blanks: simple past, strong verbs and weak verbs.  Strong verbs: know the simple past for:  fliegen, kommen, schlafen, fahren, stehen, verstehen, verlieren, anfangen, gehen, lassen, sitzen, sprechen, finden.  Know the formation of the simple past for weak verbs.

5.  Fill in blanks: comparative and superlative

6.  Reading passage and questions

7.  Culture questions based on information in the assigned Landeskunde-Info.

8.  For the writing section.  A bit different this time:  Here is the topic.  This will be a take-home essay.  Bring the completed 50-70 word passage to class to receive credit, (as due, considering vocabulary, correct grammatical useage, addressing the questions) on the test:

Wohin möchten Sie:  Beschreiben Sie eine Reise, die Sie machen möchten and schreiben Sie etwas zu jedem der folgenden Bereiche:

  •   Wohin Sie möchten
  •    Warum Sie dieses Reiseziel (detination) wählen (was man dort       unternehmen oder sehen kann)
  • Wann Sie dorthin wollen
  • Wie lange die Reise dauert, oder wie lange Sie dort bleiben
  • Wie Sie dorthin kommen (z.B. Schiff, Flugzeug, ??)
  • Was die Reise kostet (pro Person)
10C students:  Prepare a presentation based on the above topic, including information addressing all of the questions of Wohin, warum, etc.  Please pace your presentation so that it does not exceed 5 minutes.  Some visuals of your destination would be an interesting addition to your presentation!  I will have the laptop and projector available.

Write answers to Akt. 8, p. 299.

_____________________

Grammatik im Kontext:

Read: Narrating Events in the Past: The Simple Past Tense, pp. 306-7.

Übung 10, p. 307: fill in the blanks.  See page 196 for a chart of modals in the simple past.

Übung 11, p. 307.  Rewrite the sentences as indicated per the example.

Read "Analyse", p. 309 and identify all the verbs in the simple past.  Write them down in three columns: strong, weak and modal verbs.  Write the infinitives for all verbs.  Don't be concerned with the new past participles you might encounter.

Read and study "Strong Verbs", p. 308.  Note that verbs that are strong in English (i.e. don't form the past tense with "ed") also tend to be strong in German.  However, these are ones that have to be memorized.

Read "mixed verbs" and "Sprach-Info" (p. 308-9)

Fill in the blanks for Übung 12, p. 310 (this is based on the Analyse, p. 309)

Write sentences for Übung 14.  Be sure to read Sprach-Info (p. 309) before doing this one.

Note: there will be a section on the final covering the "simple past tense".  However, I will give you a list of 10 verbs (strong) that you should be familiar with in terms of the SPT.  The modal forms must be memorized, as well as how to form the SPT with weak verbs (easy!).
